The Trade Marathon
Culture, Copper and Trade
Honouring Zambia's Copper Heritage
The Trade Marathon packages and celebrates the history and growth of mining and trade on the Copperbelt. The history of international trade and commerce on the Copperbelt dates as far back as the late 1880s, when the Lamba Chiefs and their people, interacted with the Arab traders from the East Coast. Trade grew exponentially with the discovery of the copper mines in the 1930s, leading to the transformation of this rural region of Northern Rhodesia at the time, into a global cosmopolitan hub, as industry and labour grew. Today, the Copperbelt, remains as the core trade hub of the world as the demand for copper, industrialisation and logistics surges.
The discovery and subsequent mining of copper in the 1930s transformed the Copperbelt into a global hub of mining, trade, and cultural exchange. This inaugural event honours that rich legacy — bringing together athletes, businesses, and communities in a celebration of heritage, endurance, and the spirit of trade.
Join us on Sunday, 5th July 2026 in Ndola as we run to remember, celebrate, and inspire the next generation of Zambia's trade story.
